Iranian Actresses Summoned Over Hijab Violations Amid Crackdown on Public Dress Code

Iran’s judiciary has summoned actresses Baran Kosari and Shaghayegh Dehghan for violating the country’s hijab laws, as the crackdown on public dress code extends to businesses and sports events. State-affiliated media reported on Monday that both actresses face prosecution for not fully adhering to hijab laws, which were enacted after the 1979 Islamic revolution.

Kosari allegedly attended a fellow actor’s funeral without a headscarf, while Dehghan was photographed with her hair visible at a book unveiling in Tehran. They join a growing list of prominent Iranian cinema figures charged with hijab violations, including Fatemeh Motamedaria, Afsaneh Baygan, and veteran actor Reza Kianian.

Tehran prosecutor Ali Salehi warned that celebrities who ignore judicial summons could face arrest. The crackdown on hijab laws intensified after the September death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was arrested for allegedly violating hijab laws. Her death in custody sparked months of protests across Iran.
