Iranian Human Rights Activist Narges Mohammadi Sentenced to 8 Years in Jail, 70 Lashes

Iranian human rights activist Narges Mohammadi has been sentenced by a court in the Islamic Republic to eight years in prison and over 70 lashes. The sentence was handed down after a five-minute hearing, her husband, Taghi Rahmani, who is living in France, announced on Sunday in a tweet. The case against her is unclear. She had been jailed since November after her arrest at a memorial for man killed during a protest in 2019, though reportedly has been out of the prison recently on medical leave.  In May 2021 she was given a sentence of 80 lashes and 30 months in jail on charges of “propaganda” against Iran’s Islamic system. She was summoned to prison four months later but did not respond since she considered the conviction unjust. Mohammadi was first arrested and imprisoned in 1998 and has been in and out of Iranian prisons ever since for her human rights work.
