Iraq Returns 14 Iranian Prisoners in Ongoing Repatriation Effort

Iraq transferred 14 Iranian prisoners back to their home country on Monday, marking another step in the ongoing effort to repatriate inmates under a convict repatriation agreement with Iran. This transfer, as detailed by Iran’s Justice Ministry, signifies the seventh group of Iranian prisoners returned from Iraq since the agreement’s inception in 2011.

Iran’s deputy justice minister for human rights and international affairs, Askar Jalalian, confirmed the repatriation through a statement on the ministry’s website. The prisoners, who crossed back into Iran via the Mehran border in the west, were previously detained in Iraq on various charges, receiving substantial prison sentences. They will continue serving their terms in Iran.

Further emphasizing the scope of this repatriation initiative, Jalalian revealed plans for the imminent return of additional Iranian prisoners from Turkey and Armenia.
