Iraq Signs Gas Import Deal With Turkmenistan To Bolster Power Supply

Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity announced on Saturday that it had finalized an agreement with Turkmenistan to import up to 20 million cubic meters of gas per day to support its power plants. This deal, seen as a significant step in diversifying Iraq’s energy sources, aims to address the country’s ongoing fuel shortages.

Iraqi Electricity Minister Ziyad Ali Fadhil highlighted the importance of the agreement in meeting the energy needs of Iraq’s power stations. The ministry explained that the deal was reached after detailed negotiations regarding pricing, gas volumes, supply methods, and contract terms.

According to the official Iraqi News Agency, Turkmenistan will provide Iraq with 20 million cubic meters of gas per day during the summer months and 10 million cubic meters per day in the winter.

This deal comes as Iraq faces challenges in securing a reliable gas supply. Although Iraq relies heavily on gas from Iran, the supply is often disrupted due to Iraq’s financial debts to Iran and complications arising from US sanctions, which hinder payment in US dollars.
