Iraq, US Discuss Coalition Forces’ Exit Strategy
Iraq and the United States are engaged in discussions regarding the withdrawal of US-led coalition forces from Iraq, the Iraqi military announced on Tuesday. The dialogue took place during a meeting of the joint Higher Military Commission (HMC) on Monday, focusing on the accomplishments of various subcommittees over the past months. Spokesman Yahya Rasoul said the discussions also covered the ongoing threat posed by the Islamic State (IS) group, the current security landscape, and the readiness of Iraqi security forces to maintain stability.
Formed in January, the HMC aims to devise a strategy for the departure of foreign troops, which have been stationed in Iraq since 2014 to assist in the battle against IS fighters. The presence of these forces has been a pivotal part of the international effort to counter the spread and influence of IS, providing crucial support to Iraqi military operations. The talks mark a significant step toward shifting the responsibility for security back to Iraqi forces, reflecting both nations’ commitment to ending foreign military presence and promoting sovereignty and stability in Iraq.
