Israel Boosts Clean Energy Efforts With Natural Gas Connection in Kiryat Shmona
Israel’s Energy and Infrastructure Ministry announced a plan on Monday to connect Kiryat Shmona, the country’s northernmost city, to the national natural gas network. This endeavor is part of Israel’s broader clean energy transition strategy. The project involves constructing a 21-mile (33-km) gas pipeline, costing 30 million shekels ($8.19 million), between Kiryat Shmona’s industrial zones and the Mahanayim Junction to its south. The ministry highlighted the benefits of the industrial sector’s shift to natural gas from polluting fuels like diesel and mazut, a low-quality heavy fuel oil, pointing toward improved energy efficiency. Last week, the ministry, in collaboration with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), announced similar plans to extend natural gas connections to major IDF bases.
