Israel Cuts Red Tape for American Embassy in Jerusalem

Officials of the Israeli government and the Jerusalem Municipality are moving mountains in order to fast-track American plans to open a temporary embassy in Jerusalem in time for the planned celebration in May. Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon has done for the US what Israelis seeking to build only dream of: the waiver of necessary permits. Kahlon announced on Tuesday that it will allow the municipality to forgo permits necessary for building a wall and an escape route from the building. In a statement, Kahlon said he was not going to allow “needless bureaucracy” to hold up the project – a statement many Israelis see as a tacit admission that the building permits required are unnecessary.
