Israel has broken through the seemingly endless continuum of negative news stories with word that Morocco has agreed to purchase a pair of advanced spy satellites from the government-owned Israel Aerospace Industries. The $1 billion deal follows a previous agreement to purchase the Barak 8 air defense system for about $500 million.

The arrangement was reportedly finalized before the outbreak of war following the October 7 massacre. Still, observers note there has not been talk of canceling the sale because of pressure from Arab states during the fighting. Credit for the latest pact is being given to the 2020 Abraham Accords, which created the environment for improved relations between several neighboring countries and the Jewish state.
In securing the contract, the IAI outdistanced the European consortium that built the satellites that will be replaced by Israel’s Opsat 13 over five years.
