Israeli Forces Scale Back Presence in Southern Gaza
The Israeli military announced on Sunday the withdrawal of almost all ground troops from the southern Gaza Strip, leaving only one brigade in place. This strategic move raises questions about the potential impact of the planned incursion into Rafah, a key objective for Israeli leaders aiming to dismantle Hamas operations in the area.
The partial withdrawal coincides with Egypt’s preparations to facilitate discussions for a cease-fire and the release of hostages, marking a critical juncture in the conflict that erupted six months ago following Hamas’ surprise attack on Israel. Rafah has emerged over the past few months as a pivotal shelter for over a million Palestinians.
The conflict has been devastating, with Israeli sources reporting over 1,200 fatalities during the October 7 attack and the Gaza Health Ministry citing more than 33,100 Palestinian deaths due to the offensive. The remaining Israeli brigade, identified as Nahal, effectively divides Gaza, complicating the movement of civilians within the enclave.
Moreover, the Israel Defense Forces has initiated a reorganization around Gaza, establishing new “security zones” and shifting focus towards intelligence-driven operations and force rejuvenation, signaling readiness for potential reengagement. This repositioning is said to be independent of political pressures.
