Kuwaiti Crown Prince Inaugurates New Parliamentary Term Amid Calls for Change
Kuwait’s crown prince, Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, initiated the 17th term of the National Assembly on Tuesday. In his address, Al-Sabah stressed the importance of utilizing constitutional means to attain political goals, warning against wasting time on conflicts and disputes.
The crown prince urged the National Assembly to prioritize the completion of delayed legislation to fulfill public aspirations. “We look forward to democratic practices that contribute to resurgence and activating the role of the National Assembly,” Al-Sabah stated.
His remarks came after a general election in September, which brought in 27 new lawmakers to the 50-member assembly, reflecting the public’s mandate for change. However, in a surprising move, Kuwait’s Constitutional Court annulled the decree dissolving the prior parliament in March, leading to its reinstatement.
Soon after, the ruling Al Sabah family dissolved the parliament again, leading to another vote. The majority of lawmakers elected in September managed to secure their seats again in this most recent election.
