Libya Deports Nearly 1,000 Migrants to Egypt and Nigeria
Libya’s Illegal Migration Control Department on Tuesday deported 963 illegal migrants to Egypt and Nigeria, as part of its ongoing efforts to manage undocumented migration. Mohamed Bre’a, the undersecretary for security affairs of the department, confirmed the deportations on Tuesday, stating that the process is a regular occurrence.
The Egyptian and Nigerian nationals were processed through the department’s deportation office. Egyptian migrants were transported by land back to their home country, while Nigerian migrants were repatriated by air. This action is part of Libya’s broader strategy to handle the complex issue of illegal migration, a challenge that has been exacerbated by the country’s internal conflict and its position as a transit point for migrants heading toward Europe.
Libya’s approach to illegal migration has drawn international attention, with various human rights organizations expressing concerns over the treatment of migrants in the country. The deportations highlight the ongoing dilemmas faced by countries grappling with the realities of undocumented migration in a region marked by instability and economic challenges.
