Libya’s Prime Minister Vows To Defend National Unity Against Renewed Conflicts

Libyan Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh declared on Sunday that his government was committed to resisting any efforts to reignite military conflicts or further divide the country. Dbeibah made these comments during a graduation ceremony for military college and academy students in Tripoli, Libya’s capital.

In his speech, Dbeibah emphasized that “the unity of Libya is a red line” and reaffirmed his government’s dedication to building a robust army grounded in loyalty to the nation, rather than to individuals or factions. He urged the newly graduated military students to uphold the principles of Libya’s founding military leaders, protecting the country from both external threats and internal ambitions that could lead to a return to authoritarian rule.

Libya has been mired in political instability since the 2011 overthrow of Moammar Gadhafi, with the country divided between rival governments and foreign powers vying for influence. Just days before Dbeibah’s remarks, violent clashes erupted east of Tripoli between competing militias, resulting in at least nine deaths, 16 injuries, and the displacement of numerous families, according to local officials.

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya condemned the recent violence, calling for the unification of Libya’s military and security forces, and the establishment of legitimate, accountable institutions to maintain peace and order.
