Massacres in Syria’s Coastal Region Prompt Calls for Justice

A series of massacres targeting Alawite civilians in Syria’s coastal region has left over 1,000 dead, leading to widespread demands for justice and an official investigation, Rizik Alabi reports. The attacks, documented in villages such as Al-Sanobar in the Latakia province, have sparked international condemnation, including from the United States. The Syrian government has launched an inquiry into the killings, with the newly formed national independent commission pledging to hold those responsible accountable.

Access to affected areas remains heavily restricted, but survivors describe horrific scenes of violence. One resident recounted how soldiers stormed homes, executing people without warning. Others said entire communities were devastated, with young men systematically targeted and executed. Mass graves have been discovered, adding to the grim toll.

Rami Makhlouf, the cousin of ousted President Bashar Assad, publicly accused Brig. Gen. Ghiath Dalla and elements of the former regime of orchestrating the bloodshed. He criticized Assad as a “fleeing president” and blamed him for Syria’s collapse. Meanwhile, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights described the massacres as “systematic killing” based on religious identity.

Syria’s interim president, Ahmad al-Sharaa, vowed that no one would be above the law. The investigative commission, consisting of judges, security officials, and human rights lawyers, is expected to present its findings within 30 days. Survivors continue to seek justice, hoping their testimonies will bring accountability, Alabi reports.
