Palestinian President Opposes Hamas Leader’s Push for Protests in Jordan

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas publicly condemned calls for destabilizing Jordan, reacting sharply to a Hamas official’s encouragement for Jordanian demonstrations in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. In a firm statement through the WAFA news agency, Abbas emphasized that Jordan’s stability is paramount for Palestinians and their aspirations, cautioning against actions that could plunge the region into turmoil.

This stance came after Khaled Meshal, a leading figure of Hamas residing abroad, called for widespread protests in Jordan to support Gaza during a virtual address to a women’s gathering in Jordan. Meshal highlighted Jordan’s proximity and shared solidarity with Palestine, urging collective action.

Jordanian officials, however, rebuked Meshal’s plea, viewing it as a ploy to sway public opinion. Abbas reiterated Palestine’s support for Jordan, aligning under King Abdullah II’s leadership, signifying a clear divide between the Palestinian Authority’s and Hamas’s approaches to regional politics and solidarity movements.
