Qatar Continues to Fill Hamas’s Coffers

Qatar over the weekend delivered another huge cash instalment to the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip, funds that are ostensibly earmarked for distribution to the largely impoverished population. Some Israeli politicians, including Avigdor Liberman, who seems destined to play the role of kingmaker following the September 17 national elections, have hammered Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s willingness to allow tens of millions of dollars to be transferred to the coffers of a terrorist group committed to the Jewish state’s destruction. In fact, Liberman has accused Netanyahu of paying off Hamas in exchange for quiet along the shared border after numerous deadly flareups over the past three months. Moreover, thousands of Palestinians have been staging violent protests along the frontier almost every Friday afternoon. Israel and Hamas agreed to a loose cease-fire earlier this year, although the latter claims Jerusalem has not held up its end of the bargain. Hamas dissatisfaction is generally expressed through the intermittent firing of projectiles at Israeli civilian population centers. Recently, a Hamas politburo member caused a firestorm by calling on Palestinians living abroad to kill Jews wherever they could be found.
