Saudi Crown Prince Advocates for Dialogue Between Pakistan, India Over Kashmir Dispute

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, meeting in Riyadh on Sunday, discussed the crucial need for dialogue between Pakistan and India to address the ongoing tensions over the disputed region of Kashmir. This conversation marked Sharif’s first international visit since his election victory in February.

The leaders emphasized the importance of resolving the longstanding issues between the two countries, particularly focusing on the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, to ensure regional peace and stability. The joint statement released by Pakistan’s foreign office and the Saudi government highlighted the mutual agreement on the necessity of dialogue.

Kashmir, a Himalayan territory claimed entirely by both nations but controlled in parts, has been a flashpoint for conflict since their independence from Britain in 1947, leading to multiple wars between India and Pakistan. The relationship between the two countries has been especially tense since a 2019 attack in Kashmir linked to Pakistan-based fighters prompted retaliatory measures by India.

In light of these tensions, Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh recently asserted India’s readiness to pursue combatants across the border into Pakistan. This statement follows a report by Britain’s Guardian newspaper on India’s covert operations against armed groups in Pakistan, which the Indian government has not confirmed.

Moreover, Sharif and the crown prince discussed accelerating a $5 billion investment package to aid Pakistan’s struggling economy and fulfill conditions for continued International Monetary Fund support. The meeting also touched upon allegations of Indian involvement in the deaths of Pakistani citizens, claims India has categorically denied.
