Sudan Conflict Hits One-Year Mark With Famine Threat Looming

The conflict in Sudan has now endured for a year, resulting in over 14,790 deaths and displacing 8.2 million people, according to a recent United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs report. Amid this devastating war, there are increasing fears of a famine that could exacerbate the suffering of millions.

Mohamed Chande Othman, chair of the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission for Sudan, emphasized the dire need for a ceasefire and called for immediate humanitarian access to aid those in need. Othman highlighted ongoing investigations into attacks on civilians and critical infrastructure, such as hospitals and schools, which further complicate relief efforts.

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) have both issued stark warnings about the worsening food security crisis. Adam Yao of the FAO stressed the urgent need for assistance, while WFP’s Eddie Rowe predicted severe starvation and malnutrition without sustained aid.

Despite international calls for peace, Sudan’s military leaders remain committed to continuing the conflict. General Commander Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan of the Sudanese Armed Forces and RSF Commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo have both expressed intentions to pursue military victories rather than engage in negotiations, signaling a grim outlook for any immediate resolution.
