Turkey Says 23 Kurdish Fighters Killed in Syria Airstrikes

Turkey announced on Sunday that its military had killed 23 Kurdish fighters in northern Syria, marking the latest in a series of attacks on Kurdish groups since US President Donald Trump took office last month

The Turkish defense ministry said the fighters were members of the Syrian Kurdish YPG militia and the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party PKK Turkey considers both groups to be the same while the US distinguishes between them recognizing the PKK as a terrorist organization but supporting the YPG as a key ally in the fight against Islamic State

Turkey has long urged Washington to end its support for the YPG hoping that Trump would abandon the policy of his predecessor President Joe Biden Turkish forces and their allied Syrian factions have clashed repeatedly with Kurdish groups particularly after the fall of Syrian President Bashar Assad in December

Ankara has warned that the Syrian Democratic Forces SDF a US-backed coalition that includes the YPG must disarm or face further military action

The strikes come as roughly 2000 American troops remain in Syria supporting the SDF and YPG With tensions high between Turkey and the US over Kurdish forces the latest attacks signal a potential escalation in the conflict.
