UN Reports Nearly 5 Million Displaced by Sudan Conflict
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported on Monday that nearly 4.8 million people have been displaced due to ongoing conflict in Sudan since mid-April. The clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces have also resulted in at least 3,000 deaths and over 6,000 injuries, according to the Sudanese Health Ministry.
Of those displaced, about 1 million have sought refuge in neighboring countries, while at least 2 million children have been forced to flee their homes. Earlier the same day, the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) announced an urgent appeal for $1 billion to aid over 1.8 million people predicted to flee to adjacent nations by the end of 2023.
The UNHCR’s funding request represents a twofold increase from initial estimates made in May. The conflict has led to deadly armed confrontations in Khartoum and various other regions since April 15.
