US Cargo Ship Targeted by Houthi Missile Strike off Yemeni Coast

US Central Command (CENTCOM) reported on Monday that Houthi forces in Yemen targeted the US-owned dry bulk cargo ship Gibraltar Eagle with an anti-ship ballistic missile.

According to a statement from US-based Eagle Bulk Shipping, the vessel was carrying steel products when it was struck by an unidentified projectile approximately 100 miles off the Gulf of Aden coast, resulting in minor damage but no injuries.

“As a result of the impact, the vessel suffered limited damage to a cargo hold but is stable and is heading out of the area,” the statement adds.

Earlier on Monday, British maritime security firm Ambrey reported and issued an alert regarding a missile attack on a Marshall Islands-flagged, US-owned bulk cargo liner, located east of Bab el-Mandeb near the port of Aden.

The Yemen-based Houthis assert that their attacks target commercial vessels either financially connected to Israel or traveling to Israeli ports, in protest of Israel’s ongoing conflict with Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The Iran-aligned Shia rebel faction, controlling the capital Sanaa and significant portions of Yemeni territory along the northern and western borders of the Red Sea, has either seized or attempted to seize multiple vessels and launched numerous missile attacks against civilian ships.

Ambrey’s report suggested that the attack was not likely affiliated with Israel but was instead a retaliatory action against the US. Last week, in their first military response to the group, US and British forces carried out numerous tactical strikes against Houthi assets in Yemen, targeting radar facilities, launch sites, and munitions depots.

Despite these countermeasures, the emboldened Houthis have vowed to continue their campaign in the Red Sea. Following the initial round of US and British strikes, Houthi leader Abdel-Malek al-Houthi immediately declared that reprisals would be imminent.

CENTCOM reported that on Sunday, a US fighter jet intercepted an anti-ship missile launched by the Houthis towards the USS Laboon destroyer.
