A New Political Process That Will Be Accepted by All

A New Political Process That Will Be Accepted by All

Maariv, Israel, March 21

The conflict in Gaza has persisted for nearly half a year with no end in sight, prompting concerns about the lack of a post-war plan. The absence of a political and diplomatic strategy alongside military actions is a cause for grave concern. A comprehensive approach is needed to achieve the war’s objectives while safeguarding crucial Israeli interests. Current mediation efforts focus on securing the release of hostages and implementing a ceasefire, with hopes of initiating a broader peace process. However, these efforts may fall short of addressing all necessary measures and could be considered irresponsible. The Israeli government’s emphasis on what it does not want is clear, but there is a glaring lack of articulated goals or principles outlining desired outcomes. Here are some key principles that could serve as a foundation for a post-war plan, potentially garnering support from Israel’s coalition partners and the international community. Firstly, the release of kidnapped individuals in exchange for Palestinian prisoners should be pursued, as it is a widely supported objective both domestically and internationally. Providing substantial humanitarian assistance to Gaza residents is essential to alleviate suffering and demonstrate goodwill, in line with prevailing international expectations. Furthermore, Hamas mustn’t perpetuate control over Gaza, a stance supported by regional and global stakeholders. Israel must make a definitive statement regarding the future governance of the region, clarifying its intentions to avoid misunderstandings or internal divisions. By affirming the Palestinian Authority as the legitimate governing body in the region, Israel demonstrates a commitment to stable governance and constructive dialogue. This support should be conditional on necessary reforms within the Authority to address existing weaknesses and enhance its effectiveness. Notably, any plans for population transfers or forced relocations within Gaza are categorically unacceptable and should not be considered a viable option. Clarity on this matter is vital to uphold trust in Israel’s policies and demonstrate its commitment to ethical and humanitarian values. Presenting these principles can pave the way for a new narrative, positioning Israel as a proactive and responsible player in the conflict. By engaging openly with these proposals, Israel can shift from a passive observer to a proactive initiator of meaningful change that benefits all parties involved. It is essential to act swiftly on these principles, whether through independent declaration or in coordination with key allies like the United States. By doing so, Israel can take a significant step toward resolving the conflict and achieving long-term stability in the region. Michael Harari (translated by Asaf Zilberfarb)
