Growing Criticism of Israel Emboldens the ‘Axis of Evil’

Maariv, Israel, April 6

The Axis of Evil is gaining strength from the recent surge of international criticism towards Israel. In the wake of the tragic incident involving the killing of seven aid workers from Global Central Kitchen, pressure on Israel has intensified from both the American administration and the global community. This event could potentially serve as a pivotal moment that could change the course of reality. Calls for Israel to modify its behavior, particularly regarding humanitarian aid and operations on the ground, have been vociferous. Key figures within the Biden Administration have issued warnings that a failure on Israel’s part to alter its policies could result in a shift in the administration’s stance. Western nations have also called for a cease-fire and a reevaluation of security ties with Israel. It is becoming evident that the mounting criticism and diminishing legitimacy experienced by Israel could severely impact the country’s political and military capabilities, particularly in its ongoing conflicts with Hamas and Hizbullah. The escalating crisis between Israel and the United States seems to be emboldening elements within the Axis, as demonstrated by recent statements from Hizbullah’s secretary-general, Hassan Nasrallah. Nasrallah’s remarks focused on the damage to Israel’s international reputation and the strained relationship between Biden and [Israeli Prime Minister] Netanyahu. This may lead Nasrallah to believe that Israel will lose legitimacy in continuing its conflict with Hamas, especially as Western concerns about regional instability grow. The unfolding events also seem to be encouraging the leader of Hamas, [Yahyah] Sinwar, who may be emboldened by the increased humanitarian aid to Gaza and the challenges the American administration is presenting to Israel in its operations in Rafah. Sinwar may take a more unyielding stance, looking to strike a new deal regarding hostages in exchange for a cease-fire, betting that pressure on Netanyahu will eventually force concessions. The erosion of Israeli deterrence appears to be affecting the actions of pro-Iranian militias across the Middle East. Following a lull in attacks on American bases since January, it appears that these groups are now targeting Israeli interests, displaying a noticeable shift in their priorities. To counter these developments, Prime Minister Netanyahu must focus on restoring relations with the American administration, a critical step in regaining international legitimacy and preventing actions that could hinder IDF operations. To pivot from the current unfavorable trajectory, Netanyahu must swiftly implement a plan for a comprehensive distribution of humanitarian aid and strategize for the post-conflict phase. These measures are crucial in providing Israel with the necessary flexibility to achieve its objectives in conflicts with Hamas and create a secure environment for displaced residents. Moreover, building a regional and international coalition to address the escalating threat posed by Iran is imperative, particularly as Iran inches closer to becoming a nuclear-capable state. In facing these challenges, Netanyahu is at a critical juncture where strategic decisions will shape Israel’s future. It is now time to choose between strength and vulnerability and to solidify alliances with key partners to safeguard our nation’s interests. —Dr. Shay Har-Zvi (translated by Asaf Zilberfarb)
