The Current War and the Upcoming One

The Current War and the Upcoming One

Nida Al Watan, Lebanon, March 1

According to recent CNN reports, the likelihood of Israel engaging in a military conflict with Hizbullah is steadily growing. Whether it happens imminently or in the approaching spring months is inconsequential. The anticipation of this conflict is not baseless; it stems from a long history of ideological analysis that dates back to the 1950s. The expansionist ambitions of the occupying entity and its antagonistic stance have been well-documented over the years. The recent war in Gaza, in which Hizbullah intervened from southern Lebanon, has further escalated tensions. The decision to open a new front in support of the Palestinian resistance has heightened the chances of conflict. While Hamas’ motivations in the conflict seemed straightforward—striking a blow to Israel and taking hostages for prisoner exchanges—Israel’s response was unexpectedly severe. Prime Minister Netanyahu rallied support for an aggressive stance, declaring a zero-tolerance policy toward any perceived threats. Gaza suffered immense destruction, and the rhetoric of military action as the only solution persisted. Israeli strategists are openly discussing the imminent danger posed by Hizbullah. While they acknowledge the group’s formidable capabilities, they are focused on neutralizing the perceived threat. Despite international pressures to find a diplomatic resolution, the specter of widespread conflict looms large. Should this war come to pass, Israel anticipates facing a barrage of destructive missiles from Hizbullah. In response, it has plans to inflict severe damage upon Lebanon. Analysts fear devastating consequences for Lebanon should Israeli forces launch a full-scale attack, including widespread destruction of infrastructure and economic collapse. The looming threat of conflict underscores the urgent need for diplomacy and de-escalation efforts. Lebanon, already burdened by several crises, cannot afford the catastrophic consequences of war while Israel enjoys international support and economic stability. The possibility of war is real, and it falls upon those who care for the well-being of Lebanon to work toward preventing it. —Tony Francis (translated by Asaf Zilberfarb)
