Israel Headed for Repeat Elections: Anatomy of a Political Fiasco (AUDIO INTERVIEW)

Israelis will yet again be heading to the ballot box, after Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu for the first time in the country’s history failed to cobble together a coalition within the allotted time frame.

Netanyahu missed Wednesday’s deadline to form the next government and subsequently pushed through a bill to dissolve parliament.

The development stands to have significant ramifications for Israel, given the security challenges it is facing, foremost Iran’s attempt to create permanent military infrastructure across the border in Syria.

Many believe that the political dysfunction may also force US President Donald Trump to shelve his much-anticipated Israeli-Palestinian peace plan.

The Media Line discussed matters with Dr. Avi Bareli, an expert on Israeli politics who teaches at Ben Gurion University of the Negev.
