Abbas Slams US at UN for Blocking Cease-fire, Backing Israel in Gaza Conflict
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas criticized the Biden Administration during his address at the United Nations General Assembly, accusing the US of obstructing efforts to end the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
“We regret that the US administration—the largest democracy in the world—on three occasions obstructed draft resolutions at the Security Council demanding Israel to observe a ceasefire,” Abbas said. He accused the United States of encouraging Israel’s military actions by repeatedly using its veto power and supplying Israel with weapons used in the conflict.

“This is the United States—the same country that was the only member in the Security Council that voted against granting the state of Palestine full membership in the UN,” Abbas said, expressing disbelief over what he sees as the US’s consistent opposition to Palestinian statehood and rights.
The US has defended its stance, arguing that unilateral actions in international forums will not advance the cause of Palestinian statehood, which it insists must be achieved through negotiations with Israel. In contrast, Abbas highlighted Israel’s rejection of a two-state solution and called for punitive measures against Israel, including a potential push to remove it from the United Nations over violations of various resolutions.
