Biden and Harris Push Netanyahu To Secure Gaza Cease-fire and Hostage Release

US President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris pressed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the urgent need to finalize a cease-fire deal with Hamas during Thursday’s visit to the United States. The discussions, described as both “frank and constructive,” highlighted a concerted US effort to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and secure the release of hostages held by Hamas.

President Biden met with Netanyahu ahead of Harris, emphasizing the necessity of bridging the gaps to ensure the flow of humanitarian aid and to conclude a cease-fire that would halt the nine-month-old conflict. This war erupted on October 7 following a deadly attack by Hamas, leading to significant casualties and the capture of over 250 individuals by the terrorist group. Biden, expressing solidarity with Israel, also highlighted the critical gaps that need closure to forge a ceasefire and the importance of ensuring humanitarian aid flows into Gaza without impediments.

During her meeting with Netanyahu, Vice President Harris did not mince words, expressing a strong desire to see an end to the conflict. “It is time for this war to end,” Harris declared, focusing on the suffering of Palestinian civilians and the broader implications for regional stability. “We cannot allow ourselves to be numb to the suffering, and I will not be silent.” The meetings also involved discussions with families of American hostages, adding a personal dimension to the high-stakes diplomacy. The families left feeling hopeful, a sentiment echoed by Harris, who pushed for the immediate resolution of the talks. “As I just told Prime Minister Netanyahu, ‘it is time to get this deal done,’” Harris added, reflecting the critical nature of the moment.

Both Biden and Harris stressed the importance of a swift agreement that would facilitate a six-week cease-fire and the phased release of hostages, including women, the elderly, and the wounded. This plan represents a ray of hope for a possible de-escalation of the conflict, which has taken a heavy toll on the Gaza Strip and intensified global concern over the humanitarian situation.
