Blinken Responds to State Department Infighting Surrounding Current Gaza Policy
Secretary of State Antony Blinken, in a department-wide open letter to staff, confronts dissent within the US State Department regarding the current administration's policy approach towards Israel and the conflict in Gaza
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken sent a message that seeks to alleviate tension and respond to concerns expressed by diplomats and other staff members from both within the Department and the US Agency for International Development. Blinken writes “we’re listening” and that “[he knows] that for many of you, the suffering caused by this crisis is taking a profound personal toll.”

In his letter Blinken directs staff to the current processes that the administration has put in place to welcome internal dissent, stating: “We’ve organized forums in Washington to hear from you, and urged managers and teams to have candid discussions at posts around the world precisely so we can hear your feedback and ideas.”
Blinken’s return from his trip to the Middle East comes as regional tensions beyond the Israel-Hamas war continue to escalate to potentially disastrous levels. The internal division and frustration within the State Department appear to see little chance of being immediately resolved despite Iranian proxies exacerbating regional crises in Yemen, Syria, and Lebanon.
