Civilian Casualties Mount as Clashes Intensify in South Darfur

In an escalating conflict between Sudan’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), at least 16 civilians were killed in Nyala, the capital of Sudan’s South Darfur state, according to the Darfur Bar Association. This professional legal body announced on Saturday that Friday’s artillery exchange between the combatants led to civilian homes being hit by projectiles.

“The fighting in Nyala occurs amid random street and house shootings and sniper killings,” the association disclosed in its statement. The city has been a hotspot for army-RSF confrontations for the past three days, adversely impacting neighborhoods like Al-Wohda and Karari.

The association has called for an immediate cessation of hostilities, particularly those targeting civilians.

Since April 15, Sudan has been embroiled in a violent struggle involving the Sudanese army and the RSF, leading to over 3,000 fatalities and more than 6,000 injuries, based on data from the Sudanese Health Ministry. This conflict has also resulted in the displacement of more than 3 million people, both within Sudan and to other countries, according to UN estimates.
