Committee Appointed to Oversee Qatar’s First Legislative Elections

Qatar set up a committee to oversee its first legislative elections, its interior ministry announced. The elections for 30 members of the Shura Council are set to be held in October. The ruling emir will appoint another 15 members. In the past, the emir appointed the entire council.

No date has officially been set for the election, and it is not yet exactly clear how it will operate, Reuters reported. The country does hold municipal elections. Qatar bans political parties, however.

Only about 10% of the 2.7 million people living in  the country are Qatari; the rest are foreign workers, according to the report.
