Ex-Pakistan PM Imran Khan Arrested on Corruption Charges Amid Ongoing Legal Battles
Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan was arrested in Islamabad today on corruption charges brought by the country’s anti-corruption agency. Khan was apprehended by paramilitary troops while submitting his biometric data for a court appearance. His party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, shared a video showing the forces attacking the Islamabad High Court premises before arresting Khan.
Khan was ousted in a parliamentary no-confidence vote last year and has since led a popular campaign against the current government, accusing it of colluding with the military to remove him from office. Multiple arrest warrants have been issued for Khan, who faces allegations of illegally selling gifts from foreign dignitaries while in office, which he has rejected as “biased.”
In March, Khan’s Lahore residence was the scene of a standoff between police and his supporters when officers attempted to arrest him on corruption charges. The cricket legend-turned-politician believes Pakistani authorities are trying to remove him from the political playing field ahead of October’s general election.
