In First, PLO Selects Hussein al-Sheikh as Abbas’s Deputy

The Palestine Liberation Organization’s Executive Committee announced on Saturday the appointment of Hussein al-Sheikh as deputy head of the PLO, marking the first time the body has installed a second-in-command beneath President Mahmoud Abbas.

Al-Sheikh currently serves as Secretary-General of the Executive Committee and previously held the portfolio of civil affairs minister for the Palestinian Authority. Known for his strong ties with both Israel and the United States, his elevation is widely viewed as a move to position him as a frontrunner to eventually succeed the 89-year-old Abbas.

This is a developing story, check back for more details.
