Iran Summons Hungarian Ambassador Over Disputed Gulf Islands

Iran summoned Hungary’s ambassador to protest an EU-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) statement disputing Tehran’s control over three contested islands in the Persian Gulf.

The joint EU-GCC statement called on Iran to “end its occupation” of Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb, and Abu Musa, arguing that Tehran’s control violates UAE sovereignty and UN principles.

Iran took control of the sparsely populated islands in 1971 after British rule ended and maintains a naval garrison on Greater Tunb. The islands are strategically located near the Strait of Hormuz.

The UAE has long contested Iranian control of the islands.

Hungary, currently holding the EU Council’s rotating presidency, led the EU delegation at the first EU-GCC summit last Wednesday.

According to Iran’s official news agency IRNA, Hungary’s ambassador was summoned to protest “baseless claims” in the EU-GCC joint declaration. Tehran criticized the EU’s position as “thoughtless and irresponsible.”

Last year, Russia and China, both of which maintain strong economic ties with Iran, issued separate statements supporting the UAE’s position.
