These strikes are part of a broader Israeli effort aimed at countering Iranian entrenchment and Hezbollah’s growing presence in Syria. Israel’s military operations have intensified since Islamist rebels, led by the group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, toppled Syrian President Bashar Assad on December 8.
HTS, previously affiliated with al-Qaeda, has specifically drawn Israeli scrutiny, with Israel repeatedly stressing it will not tolerate the group’s presence in southern Syria and demanding demilitarization of the area. Following Assad’s ouster, Israel expanded its military actions to include targets in Latakia province and along Syria’s border with Lebanon.
