Israel Intercepts Yemen Missile as Regional Frictions with Houthis Intensify
Israel’s military announced it intercepted a missile launched from Yemen on Thursday, marking a significant escalation in hostilities with the Houthi group. Sirens echoed across multiple Israeli cities, including Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, before the Israeli Air Force successfully brought down the projectile.
“A missile launched from Yemen was intercepted by the IAF prior to crossing into Israeli territory. Sirens were sounded in accordance with protocol,” the military said in a statement. Israel’s ambulance service confirmed that no serious injuries were reported.

Yemen’s Houthi group claimed responsibility for the strike, stating that a ballistic missile had been aimed at Ben Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv. A spokesperson, speaking on state-run television, vowed to step up attacks on Israel in response to ongoing US military operations in Yemen.
This latest development unfolds amid heightened tensions between US President Donald Trump’s administration and Iran, which the United States accuses of supporting the Houthis. Trump has threatened severe consequences for Iran if the Houthis continue to launch attacks. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards maintain that the Houthis operate independently and make their own strategic decisions.
Hostilities have escalated in recent days, with the Houthis conducting over 100 attacks on shipping since Israel’s war with Hamas began in late 2023. These strikes have disrupted global trade routes, prompting the US military to ramp up a major campaign aimed at intercepting missiles targeting Red Sea shipping lanes.
The Houthis, part of the so-called “Axis of Resistance” backed by Iran—which includes Lebanon’s Hezbollah, Hamas, and militias in Iraq—claim their attacks are in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. The US offensive in Yemen, which has killed at least 31 people according to official reports, is the most expansive American military action in the region since President Trump took office.
