Israeli Forces Continue ‘Targeted Raids’ on Syrian Bases
The Israeli military announced yesterday that it was continuing operations in Syria meant to provide security for residents of Israel’s Golan Heights. Soldiers from Israel’s Paratroopers Brigade have carried out multiple “targeted raids” on Syrian military bases in recent weeks, the military said in a press release, confiscating or dismantling rifles, ammunition, and other military equipment left behind by the former Syrian government forces.
Speaking anonymously in a video released by the Israeli military, a commander in the 474th Brigade said that the goal of the raids was “to eliminate all the weapons and capabilities” of the Syrian forces. “This is part of a series of activities where we also located rockets, explosives, and mines, along with other explosives, and even tanks and armored personnel carriers, which we dismantled,” he said.

The operations follow the fall of Bashar Assad’s government in Syria late last year. In December, Israeli ground forces moved into the demilitarized buffer zone, which has separated the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights from Syria since 1974.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday that Israeli troops would maintain an “indefinite” presence in the buffer zone. Defense Minister Israel Katz also confirmed that Israeli forces would remain stationed at nine military posts in southern Syria for the foreseeable future.
