Israeli Raids in Jenin and Tulkarm Leave Widespread Damage: Report

Israeli forces in August and September conducted extensive military operations in the West Bank towns of Jenin and Tulkarm, leaving significant destruction in their wake, according to a report in The New York Times. The raids, which lasted over two weeks, involved the use of bulldozers to destroy roads, businesses, and civilian infrastructure. Residents and officials reported widespread damage, with more than 90% of water and sewage lines in Tulkarm and 70% of roads in Jenin affected. Israeli forces stated that these operations were aimed at neutralizing fighters and locating stockpiles of weapons, but locals claim that the scale of the damage went far beyond military objectives.

During these raids, businesses and homes were destroyed, including a gas canister shop in Tulkarm’s refugee camp that was blown up despite warnings from neighbors. Rescue operations were also hindered, with ambulances often blocked from reaching those in need.

The Israeli military, responding to questions from The New York Times, claimed its actions adhered to international law and sought to minimize civilian harm, but acknowledged the damage caused to civilian structures. Local residents and rights groups argue that the intensifying airstrikes and ground operations in the West Bank may provoke further unrest and increase the number of people willing to join armed groups.
