Israelis, Palestinians Hold Joint Ceremony for Memorial Day

More than 200,000 people watched a live-streamed joint memorial ceremony held by bereaved Palestinian and Israeli families in the West Bank town of Beit Jala. The ceremony in Hebrew, Arabic, and English held on Tuesday night was organized by the Parents Circle and the Combatants for Peace organization.

The 17th annual ceremony, which was attended by three Israeli lawmakers – Michal Rozin and Mossi Raz of the Meretz party and Ibtisam Mara’ana of the Labor party – was held on Tuesday evening at the start of Israel’s Memorial Day, or Yom Hazikaron, in memory of killed Israeli soldiers and victims of terror. A simultaneous ceremony was held in Tel Aviv. The ceremonies were broadcast together on a split screen.

The participants told stories about losing their loved ones and called for peace between Israel and the Palestinians.
