Lebanon Detains 2 Brothers Suspected of Saudi Drug Smuggling

Lebanon detained two brothers allegedly connected to the attempt last month to smuggle millions of captagon pills – an amphetamine drug – in a shipment of pomegranates to Saudi Arabia.

Mohamed Fahmy, the interior minister in Lebanon’s caretaker government, announced the arrest on Sunday. Fahmy said there was no evidence that Hizbullah was in involved in the pomegranate incident, though it has been accused of an illicit drug trade.

Saudi Arabia announced a ban on the import of produce from Lebanon following the discovery of the pills. Saudi Arabia is Lebanon’s biggest produce client, importing 22% of its agricultural exports.
