Nearly 400 Civilians Killed in Afghanistan Since Taliban Takeover

Nearly 400 civilians have been killed in Afghanistan, most by a group affiliated with the Islamic State, since the Taliban took over in August 2021, the United Nations is reporting. The figure comes from a United Nations human rights report released on Monday, which covers the period from August 2021 to the end of February.

Most of the 397 civilians killed have died in attacks by the Islamic State in Khorasan Province, or ISKP (ISIS-K) group.

In a speech introducing the report on Tuesday UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet also said that Afghanistan’s Taliban rulers had curtailed women’s rights and freedoms, and expressed concern about the current humanitarian and economic crises in Afghanistan.
