Opposition Leader Lapid at INSS: ‘Government Without Policy’ Endangers Israel’s Future

At the INSS 17th Annual International Conference in Tel Aviv, a significant discussion unfolded as key figures voiced their concerns over Israel’s current government and its approach to the situation in Gaza and broader regional policies. Yair Lapid, leader of the opposition, criticized the government for lacking a cohesive strategy, particularly highlighting the discord within the government regarding aid to Gaza and the handling of the events of October 7. Lapid emphasized the necessity of a Commission of Inquiry into the events, expressing disbelief at its absence.

Nadav Argaman, the former head of the Shin Bet, echoed the sentiment of government criticism but remained optimistic about Israel’s future. He advocated for the replacement of what he described as a “disastrous government” to enable a shift in focus towards a more strategic approach to security concerns, including the threat posed by Iran and the role of Hamas as a significant adversary.

US Ambassador to Israel, Jacob L. Lew, contributed to the dialogue by underscoring the importance of normalization between Israel and Saudi Arabia, both before and after the events of October 7. “I think it’s profoundly in the interest of Saudi Arabia and Israel today. I always thought there was going to have to be a component that addressed the future of the Palestinian people.” He also highlighted the collective strength demonstrated by the Israeli people during times of crisis, pointing to it as a foundation for resilience and unity.
