PA to Start Using Postal Codes in Bid to Assert Sovereignty

The Palestinian Authority will start using its own postal codes, in a bid to assert its sovereignty and to make it easier to receive deliveries in the Palestinian territories.

The postal codes will come into effect in April. The PA minister of communications, Ishaq Sidr, made the announcement on Sunday in Ramallah.  “It is a question of asserting Palestinian rights,” he told reporters, the French news agency AFP reported.

Sidr said that six tons of packages had been held up in Jordan since 2018. He said Israel was preventing their deliveries. Israel also has been accused of opening packages destined for the Palestinian territories.

Palestinians have had to use private courier services to send or receive parcels, an expensive work-around.

The postal codes reportedly also will be extended to Gaza, which is under blockade by Israel.
