Social Affairs Minister Kamel Maddouri has been named as the new prime minister of Tunisia, according to a statement from the presidency. President Kais Saied removed Prime Minister Ahmed Hachani from his position on Wednesday, just a year after his appointment.
Earlier on the same day, Hachani had addressed the nation in a video, highlighting the government’s achievements despite challenges related to rising food and energy costs. His dismissal comes amid growing frustration over continuous water and electricity shortages in the country.

The government has blamed these issues on an ongoing drought, necessitating water rationing. According to the Agriculture Ministry, the water level in dams has dropped to a critical 25%. However, President Saied suggested that the shortages were a plot ahead of the presidential election, claiming that the dams were actually full.
Saied seeks a second five-year term in the presidential election set for October 6, facing opposition from various groups who accuse him of using intimidation tactics against his rivals to secure a second term.
Maddouri, born in 1974, became the social affairs minister on May 25, 2024, following a partial government reshuffle. Prior to this, he served as the chairman of the National Health Insurance Fund.
