UN Urges Libyan Unity and Resolution to Crisis

A UN official on Saturday emphasized the urgent need for Libyans to unite and resolve the ongoing crisis. Stephanie Khoury, the deputy special representative for political affairs in the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), issued a statement on Eid al-Adha, calling for an end to the political deadlock and economic decline that have plunged many Libyans into poverty despite the country’s abundant resources.

“The Libyan people have endured too much,” Khoury said, urging authorities to focus on the well-being of citizens. She highlighted the significance of Eid, symbolizing sacrifice and reconciliation, and called on all parties to “preserve Libya’s unity and sovereignty, and achieve prosperity for all.”

Khoury also reiterated UNSMIL’s dedication to supporting a resolution to the Libyan issue. “UNSMIL remains committed … to working with all parties to end the crisis, preserve Libya’s unity and sovereignty, and ensure a stable and prosperous future,” the statement read.

Since the 2011 uprising that overthrew Moammar Gadhafi, Libya has faced political division and instability. The country continues to grapple with a fragile democratic transition amid ongoing security and economic challenges.

Khoury’s statement underscores the importance of unity and cooperation among Libyan leaders to overcome these challenges and build a prosperous future for all citizens.
