UPenn Board of Trustees Chair Scott Bok Steps Down Following Resignation of President Liz Magill

In a surprising turn of events, the University of Pennsylvania announced the resignation of acting president Liz Magill and Board Chairman Scott Bok late Saturday. Magill, who served just two years in her role, stepped down amid mounting pressure from donors and criticism over her testimony at last week’s congressional hearing.

The controversy unfolded during the hearing, where Magill faced repeated questioning about the school’s stance regarding calls for the genocide of Jews on campus. Magill’s credibility was questioned as she struggled to respond clearly, leading to heightened public scrutiny.

In his statement, Scott Bok announced his immediate resignation as the board of trustees chair, citing the need for a fresh start. He defended Magill, stating that she is not antisemitic, instead attributing her demeanor during the hearing to the toll of relentless external attacks.

Julie Platt, vice chair of the board of trustees, has been appointed as interim chair until a successor is chosen.

“Due to her current commitment as Board Chair of the Jewish Federations of North America, Julie will only serve until a successor is appointed,” the board of trustees wrote in a statement. “The Board’s Nominating Committee will immediately undertake an expeditious process, including consultation with the full Board of Trustees, and will make a recommendation for the next Chair to the Executive Committee prior to the start of the spring term.”

Magill, expressing gratitude for her time as president, will stay on until an interim president is appointed. Despite the controversy surrounding her resignation, Magill will retain her tenured position at UPenn’s law school.

The fallout from Magill’s departure comes in the wake of criticisms against the presidents of Harvard, MIT, and UPenn, following their congressional testimony regarding the rise in antisemitism on college campuses. As the University of Pennsylvania undergoes a leadership transition, the broader implications for addressing on-campus antisemitism are yet to unfold.

Meanwhile, Claudine Gay, president of Harvard, apologized following the backlash from her testimony.

“I am so sorry,” Gay said to the Harvard Crimson. “Words matter.”
