US VP Pushes for Immediate Gaza Cease-fire, Criticizes Aid Blockade
US Vice President Kamala Harris on Sunday demanded an immediate six-week cease-fire from the Palestinian armed group Hamas and pressed Israel to enhance humanitarian aid deliveries into Gaza. Harris described the situation in Gaza as a “humanitarian catastrophe,” with innocent people suffering immensely.
During an event in Selma, Alabama, Harris made some of the US government’s most forthright comments on the ongoing conflict. She emphasized the dire need for increased aid in the Gaza Strip, where residents face the threat of famine after five months of military action by Israel.
“Given the immense scale of suffering in Gaza, there must be an immediate cease-fire,” Harris stated, highlighting a pending deal requiring Hamas’s agreement. “People in Gaza are starving. The conditions are inhumane, and our common humanity compels us to act. The Israeli government must do more to significantly increase the flow of aid. No excuses,” she added.
Harris outlined specific measures for the Israeli government to facilitate aid delivery, including opening new border crossings and ensuring the safety of humanitarian efforts. In response to the crisis, the Biden Administration has initiated airdrop operations, delivering thousands of meals into Gaza, and is exploring additional routes for aid delivery.
As cease-fire talks continue, a Hamas delegation arrived in Cairo for discussions, though progress remains uncertain. Israel reportedly boycotted the talks due to Hamas’ refusal to provide a complete list of living hostages. Despite these challenges, a US official indicated that a framework deal with Israel had been reached, aiming for a truce before Ramadan.
The potential agreement would mark a significant pause in the conflict, allowing for the exchange of hostages and detainees. Diplomatic efforts are ramping up, with Israeli war cabinet member Benny Gantz scheduled to meet with Harris and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in the coming days.
