Women’s Rights Under Scrutiny as Taliban Celebrate 2 Years in Power

The Taliban on Tuesday celebrated the second anniversary of their return to power in Kabul, highlighting the establishment of security under their version of an Islamic government. Two years ago, as US forces were withdrawing after two decades of war, the Taliban swiftly overtook Kabul. The previous Afghan security forces, built with Western assistance, collapsed, and the US-supported President Ashraf Ghani fled the nation. “Afghanistan is experiencing unparalleled peace,” declared Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid. However, the UN has documented numerous attacks on civilians. Many women, once beneficiaries of rights and freedoms under Western-backed governance, now face severe restrictions. Kabul observed the anniversary with heightened security, informal parades, and celebrations. However, many Afghan women view the date with dread. Since the Taliban’s return, girls over 12 have largely been banned from schooling, a significant barrier to Western recognition of the Taliban regime. The group’s stance on women’s rights and the suppression of journalism remain contentious. On a brighter note, corruption has reportedly decreased, and a ban on narcotics farming has cut down poppy production. The Taliban seek foreign recognition and the release of frozen funds, especially as dwindling job prospects push most of the population toward needing humanitarian aid.
