Deadline Passes for 1492 Jews to Register for Spanish Citizenship
As the deadline for members of Jewish families who were expelled from Spain in 1492 to receive Spanish citizenship arrives, officials in Madrid report that some 130,000 worldwide have taken the Spanish government up on its offer. The Justice Ministry reported that as of Tuesday, the deadline for applying, most of the applicants are from Latin countries including Venezuela, Mexico and Columbia. The offer to grant Spanish citizenship to descendants of those expelled in 1492 was made in 2015. Applicants had to prove they were from families that were expelled.
