Iran and Russia Discuss Future BRICS Expansion and Collaboration in Tehran
Iran and Russia engaged in high-level discussions on Wednesday regarding the activities and future development of the BRICS group, a coalition of emerging economies. The meeting, held in Tehran, featured Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Economic Diplomacy Mehdi Safari and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov. They explored a variety of sectors including economy, trade, energy, agriculture, science and technology, environment, sports, and culture.

Safari expressed Iran’s commitment to actively participate in the diverse activities of BRICS and pledged that the Iranian Foreign Ministry would make efforts to contribute effectively to the group. Ryabkov extended congratulations to Iran for its recent inclusion in BRICS and shared insights on Russia’s priorities as the chair of the group in 2024.
BRICS currently consists of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. However, the expansion of the group was announced at the 15th BRICS Summit in South Africa, set to include Iran, Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, effective January 1, 2024. This meeting underscores the growing international collaboration among these emerging economies and highlights Iran and Russia’s roles in shaping the future of BRICS.
