Iran, UK Discuss Red Sea Tensions and Gaza Conflict

The Iranian Foreign Minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, and former British Prime Minister David Cameron engaged in a candid discussion on Sunday about escalating tensions in the Red Sea and the ongoing conflict in Gaza. In a phone call, Amir-Abdollahian criticized the US and some Western countries for their double standards, particularly in their responses to Israel’s actions in Gaza compared to maritime security issues in the Red Sea.

Amir-Abdollahian condemned the lack of action by Western governments against Israel’s attacks in Gaza over the past 80 days. He further pressed Britain to adopt a more realistic and constructive stance on regional developments and bilateral relations.

Cameron, on his part, conveyed the UK’s perspectives on the situations in Palestine and the Red Sea. He urged Iran to play a role in de-escalating the Israeli-Hamas conflict and ensuring maritime safety. In a social media post, Cameron highlighted his discussion with Amir-Abdollahian about the Houthi attacks in the Red Sea, emphasizing their threat to lives and the global economy. He underscored Iran’s responsibility to help prevent these attacks, given its influence over the Houthis.

The Yemen-based Houthi group has claimed responsibility for several recent attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea, stating they were in support of the Palestinian people. The US and UK have accused Iran of backing these attacks, a claim Iran vehemently denies.

Meanwhile, the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza has intensified since October 7, leading to significant casualties on both sides.
