Iran Urges Kuwait To Return to Negotiating Table Over Gulf Gas Field
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani called on Kuwait to resume technical talks aimed at settling a longstanding ownership dispute over the Arash gas field in the Gulf, referred to as Durra by Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. During a press briefing in Tehran on Monday, Kanaani stressed the importance of technical and legal negotiations rather than public discourse to determine the shared rights to the gas field. He said that the maritime boundaries between Iran and Kuwait have not been officially defined, which complicates discussions about resource allocation.

Kanaani reiterated Iran’s commitment to resolving the issue through formal negotiations and expressed opposition to unilateral actions that ignore Iranian interests. This stance comes against the backdrop of increasing geopolitical tensions in the Gulf region, particularly concerning the Durra gas field.
In March 2022, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait signed a development agreement claiming exclusive rights to the field, which Iran has labeled as “illegal” and a violation of previous agreements.
